Scent

Pressed flowers set into soy wax, poured by hand in my kitchen in Kitchener. It comes in a white ceramic bowl wrapped in jute, then boxed with a ribbon and a small handmade tag.

It arrives ready to give. Nothing to wrap, no bag to find, nothing to add. That is the whole point of it.

No two are the same. That is not a flaw — that is what makes yours yours. I press and place the flowers one at a time, so yours will not look exactly like the photograph.

Who it is for

A bridesmaid. A christening. A housewarming. A birthday. A thank you to a teacher, a nurse, a neighbour. A hostess who said bring nothing. A new mother. Someone who is grieving and does not want words. Or no reason at all.

It is already boxed and tied, so it works for the gift you remembered this morning as well as the one you planned for months.

Choosing yours

The eight scents above are the ones I have made and have here now.

The flowers are your choice too. Tell me in the order notes which design you would like from the photographs, or say nothing and I will choose one for you.

Please read before you use it

  • Take everything off the top first. Untie the twine, then lift off the pressed flowers, the spices and the tag. Every one of them comes away. On a warmer, set them beside the candle if you like the look — in melted wax they sink, soak and darken.
  • Nothing stays in the wax when there is a flame — not a petal, not a stem, not a piece of bark or peel. They are there to be looked at, not burned.
  • Trim the wick to about 3 mm before every burn.
  • First burn 2 to 3 hours, until the melted wax reaches the edge. This is what keeps it from tunnelling. Never more than 4 hours at a time, and let it cool fully before relighting.
  • Stop burning when about 1 cm of wax is left.
  • Never leave a burning candle — or a warmer that is switched on — unattended. Keep away from children, pets, curtains and drafts. Use a level, heat-resistant surface, and never move it while it is hot: the bowl gets hot too.

It can also be melted on a candle warmer instead, with no flame at all — and then the pressed flowers keep their shape.
